CEFN FFOREST – D-DAY REMEMBERED
It was an honour to lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Islwyn at the war memorial in Cefn Forest as the Blackwood Royal British Legion District Branch organised a community service.
Lord Don Touhig addressed the gathered crowds with some beautiful oratory to remember the ultimate sacrifice paid by those brave souls who guaranteed the freedoms we cherish.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Armed Forces Champion Councillor Theresa Heron along with Jodie from the Cefn Fforest Community Centre read the roll call of names of the heroes on the war memorial who gave their lives. Local Councillors Shane Williams and Marina Chacon-Dawson.
There was poetry recital from Islwyn High students whilst pupils from Cefn Fforest Primary sang the national anthems and songs from the 1940s.
I know that communities from across Islwyn, including in Risca, Abercarn & Newbridge have held services, observed silences and gathered together to remember those profound events from Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944.
We will remember them.
